Treasure Trash
June 3rd 2008 22:30
We've all heard it over a million times...'one man's garbage is another man's treasure.' Did you ever really understand it? Is your garbage anybody's treasure? Do you know where to look for garbage treasure, or when to look? These are hypothetical questions that might be enlightening if you answer honestly.
Now this is a bit extreme. Nevertheless, dumpster diving can prove profitable by making or saving us money. I really would avoid food items in trash, but in extreme cases I say do what you must. The restaurant dumpsters are probably only food items. Other stores offer various items that can be useful for your needs. Grocery stores often discard food and other items. You have to keep going back and know how easy it is to get to dumpsters. Many business lock them up. Word to the wise...it pays to know when the garbage truck will be coming!
That was the ameteur treasure hunter's guide. It's true what I said, but there is a better and easier way to treasure hunt in trash!
I worked sanitation in a municipality for a number of years and learned from the best. It's called junkin', pearl divin', christmas, mo money, treasures!
Being in sanitation you find treasures from the most desolate to the most rich. I suggest you look at middle class and upward neighborhoods. Suburbs are good. If you're not an early riser then go the day before. Before what? The day before garbage pick-up day. Yes you need to do your homework to find the day of trash pick-up for your target neighborhoods.
What did I find as a sanitation worker? A variety of items. So many that I would have a garage sale once a year and make money. It was all profit from what I found in the trash. There were also items that were still good and useful to my needs.
Here's a secret...the well-to-do sometimes throw out items that have an expired warranty or are outdated! I found collectibles, dvd players and TVs that worked, and a variety of useful items over my years.
In many municipalities they have a time when they will pick up all types of trash. This occurs once or twice a year. In most of the US it occurs during, a-hem, Earth Day. This is when every scavenger treasure trash hunter comes out of the woodwork. It is also a good time to find bargains in the trash.
Trash from dumpsters and people's garbage is just one aspect of treasure in trash. Parks, public areas, airports, train/bus stations, etc. are other treasure and money areas.
Nowadays treasure is a monetary variety. We all need extra money. It takes discipline to make money and there are times when you have to disregard your pride. That's right. If applicable to you: Do you discard the beverage bottle rather than collecting the deposit?
Like I asked before...Is your garbage anybody's treasure? This is a loaded topic as you know by now. Take this advice...shred ALL your documents and anything you don't want anybody to know.
Time to start respecting money both in spending and making...
