Talking Extra Income
March 6th 2010 14:15
We all see and hear them daily and they don't seem to be letting up. I'm talking about all the commercials and shop signs that advertise that they buy gold and other precious metals and jewelries. People are being tempted because these cash for gold shops are staying in business. But is it always wise to sell your precious metals and jewelry?
Over the past few years I've heard mixed reviews about the mail-order vs. the local buyers. The local buyers seem to pay more for your merchandise. If you must sell, do your homework first. My advice is to get an estimate of your precious metals from a reputable jeweler. They may charge a fee, but it may be worth it in the long run so that you have a real idea of the worth. Just be realistic and don't expect to get that amount, because after all the buyer is in it to make money. That's just the reality and you might make a small fraction of what it is worth.
I will give you my 2 cents on the topic. Sell jewelry and not precious metals. Especially gold that never seems to lose its worth for any long period of time. Platinum is also a high paying metal that may fluctuate but holds its own. Years ago, I sold copper pennies to a scrap metal shop. Why? Because a penny is worth 1 cent, but because of the price of copper at the time, I made about 4 cents per penny because of the weight.
Diamonds may be forever, but they will never be worth what you paid. Don't expect to get back as much as you paid MOST of the time. Diamonds, like cars, lose value as soon as you take them home. I'd suggest selling jewelry on eBay or something similar.

Spring has almost sprung and it's time to earn extra income and get rid of clutter at the same time. Have a garage sale to sell items you either want to get rid of or are upgrading. If you lost weight, you may want to sell your clothes and replace them with new ones. Be selective of what you will sell at a garage sale and for how much and check around to see if you can get more money elsewhere. Try selling your electronics here and your books here.

Services soon will be in demand as aging baby-boomers and busy people will be stressed for time. Cleaning homes, doing laundry, babysitting, petsitting, grocery shopping, running errands, caring for shut-ins, etc., and so many more. Certain ones may require certification, but may be profitable in the long run. Post your services on bulletin boards usually found at supermarkets and other institutions. If your in the care service, list your services here and here.
