New Year Finances

Regardless of all the negative news about the economy, I tend to see the light at the end of the tunnel. No, it isn't a train heading for me, but rather that of a recovering economy. I was able to adjust to the economy because I am able to live a simpler life and adjust my spending. I still have my job, but prepared for the worst if it were to happen.
What would be a good way to make money in this ailing economy? If you have money to lend you can help a peer and get interest. I'm thinking tax-season and charging less than the get-your-money-now schemes to friends who do it every year. Some pay over $300 to get their quick cash, I'll charge less! It would be wise to have a contract of some kind.
You can save a lot by cutting back on expenses. Eating out is an easy expense to cut by cooking or preparing your own meals. It doesn't have to be eliminated completely, just cut back. I would order food at work almost daily and go out eating a couple of times a week, now I'll order food once a week and bring my own the other days. I'll eat out maybe once a month. Video rental is free at the library with a good old library card, which is also free. In my area they offer free internet by appointment because of limited computers and high demand. Carpooling to work really works and is beneficial both to drivers and passengers. Newspapers are still mostly free on the internet. Checking trash and recycling bins usually produce daily newspapers.
After cutting your expenses, put the money into your savings. Unforeseen expenses are a way of life. Being prepared will hurt less financially. Also it adds to your nest egg.
Resources for help in these economic times is always helpful.
