Never Happen To Me?

I just got a call from my financial institution. When the lady on the other end gave me the news, I thought I may be dealing with some sort of scam. But after giving me other numbers to call to verify the information and giving me recent transactions, I realized the information was true.
It seems that yesterday, someone made four gas purchases in Florida using a fake debit card. Since I still had my card on me, it is obviously a fake, since the person informed me that a card was swiped!
My bank is sending me a new card and I am not liable for the purchase. Kudos to my bank for catching the red flag. Since I live in New York, I have to wonder if red flags would have sounded if the purchases were made in my area?
I have no idea how the ID thief could have gotten my information. I haven't made an online purchase in over a year and I was issued a new card when my car expired earlier this year.
It is obvious that now is the time to get a free annual credit report.
This also makes me question if the cards should be replaced with cash for purchases. I'll keep you up to date on the situation in the future.
