Identity Theft Protection
January 30th 2011 20:24
Nothing can destroy a person more than having their vital information stolen. It is becoming more and more common, both with today's technology and discarding documents carelessly. There are steps to take to guard your identity, but a resourceful criminal can always take advantage of a momentary lapse of reason.
I wrote elsewhere how my debit card number was stolen and being used, and thankfully my financial institution caught it on time. They warned me, took action and eventually reimbursed me for my loss. I'll probably continue to write about this topic in the future as I find new advice on how to avoid it.
Some advice I was given is instead of getting 3 free credit reports a year(one from the three credit agencies), get one credit report from one agency every 4 months.
An idea whose time has come is Identity Theft Protection insurance.
Although it is not 100%, you might want to remove your information from marketing lists at Direct Marketing Association.
Common sense includes shredding documents, not giving out sensitive information to strangers or strange sites that ask, watching what you discard, don't carry sensitive documents such as you social security card, etc.
