Children and Money
November 30th 2008 17:44
Are parents trying to keep up with the Joneses through their children? In many cases it would seem so. After all your children must keep up with their peers when it comes to the latest fad. Usually in today's world the fad is very expensive. This becomes a dilemma when parents can't afford the fad item and can't say NO! to their children. After all they wouldn't want to hurt their children's feelings or make them feel inferior to their peers!
Some parents are paupers but have spoiled their children into believing they have the wealth of the Hiltons. They can't say no and have taken a disastrous trip to financial ruin. I've seen this scenario happen more than most would admit.
Now we all love our children and want what's best for them, but unless they get a sense of money value they will be living with us until we die. Children given everything they ask for will come to expect the same in life. Life is not their mothers and fathers and things are not given on demand without effort.
In today's tough economic times, parents who still can't say no to their children have started a writing campaign urging manufacturers to stop targeting their children with ads! I have to ask if we have come to the point that business must stop advertising altogether, because parents don't want to break their children's hearts? Parenting has truly become a lost art in today's world. This is truly a Kid Nation, ruled by love mixed with stupidity and manipulation.
From the article:
John Schenkenfelder, a financial adviser and father of three in Louisville, Ky., wrote a blog entry this month urging families to scale down their gift-giving and spend more time playing together.
I think that playing with your kids involves more effort than letter writing, so some take the easy way out. Maybe for Christmas it would be a great present to teach your kids money responsibility. There is more kids and money advice here and also here.
