Change In A Jar

May 11th 2008 20:13
I remember when people talked about saving pocket change and being able to go on an elaborate vacation cruise to an exotic location. This idea might still work for some, but in today's world you would be lucky if your grandkids finally collected enough change to go on a cruise around the block. I'm not saying to stop throwing change in the money jar, because it all adds up. There are just better ways to do it that might be considered.

Have three separate Piggy Banks. Two might even work. In one you put pennies, nickles, and dimes.(Note: It is obvious I am talking about US currency, but consider the lower and higher denominations in your currencies). In the other you can put quarters and half dollars. In the other you will put the dollars. I prefer the coin version of the dollar because it is heavier to carry if you are robbed and better likely to survive a fire than the paper currency. Try to spend the low currency before the next level of currency. Fireproof safes are worthless unless you spend over $100 for a small one.

Try to save dollars instead of pennies in today's world. But every bit counts. Let's explore some weird ways to make extra money...if it applies to you!

In an episode of the US sitcom, Seinfeld, Kramer and Newman devise this plan to collect a 10 cent deposit on a 5 cent deposit bottle. If you live in a bottle deposit State in the US, the bottle shows where there is a 5 cent deposit(example:MA-NY-VT...), and where there is a 10 cent deposit(MICH). The plan was to take bottles from NY to MICH to get an extra 5 cents. They devised a plan and eventually failed and thus was an episode. Here's something they could have done at a cheaper rate on a daily basis. Drove to NJ or PA where there is no deposit but bottles still have the deposit States printed on them. Gone back to NY and collected the deposit. If you live near a non-deposit(or a deposit) State, you can make a profit with a bit of effort.

If there is a bottle deposit in your area, don't throw away the bottle. Need extra money? Take the bottles to a refund center. Go walk in a park and pick up the bottles, it's great exercise and a tiny profit.

You heard the phrase 'One man's trash is another man's treasure'? Having worked sanitation, I can't stress how true that is. The keyword being 'treasure' meaning that you have to know where to look. I'm not talking about diving into dumpsters...unless they are in nice section!

You can find treasures in anyone's garbage, but the better the neiborhood the better the find. Instead of looking for garage sales, find out the trash pick-up day in the 'rich'er section of town and go hunting the night before. Try not to be a nuisance or you can end up in jail...consider this a friendly warning.

People in nice sections throw things out for no other reason than an expired warranty, an upgrade, or a number of reasons. Their trash is better than some new things I buy. There are everything from useful items, collectables, tools, etc. You find things that you can use...or that you can sell! Selling garbage, er ah, treasure is pure profit. Have your own garage sale!

Aging baby-boomers may be a way to make extra money. Advertise that you will run errands. Anything from taking them to appointments to shopping for them.

Clean houses and apartments. We are fortunate to be a multi-tasking no-time society!

Dog walking is still a good one. The downfall is that too many people seem to have jumped on this bandwagon in certain areas.

This has been about ways of increasing the pennies you save to dollars. Results may vary.
